Clear ceramic braces do everything metal braces do, using brackets made from a translucent, tooth-toned ceramic instead of steel. From conversational distance they read as a shadow rather than hardware.
They are the usual answer for the patient who needs fixed braces, because aligners will not achieve the movement required, but who does not want stainless steel across their front teeth for the next two years.
Ceramic is more brittle than steel and the brackets are slightly larger, so we most often place them on the upper arch where they show, and use metal on the lower where they do not. It is a small compromise that keeps treatment robust while solving the part that actually bothers people.
